GP Surgeries
All of the surgeries listed below are currently accepting new patients.
The Claypath and University Medical Group is the only GP practice actually within the NPF area,. This has two surgeries, 26 Gilesgate and the University Health Centre in Green Lane. University students are encouraged to register at the latter.
The Chastleton Medical Group has a lot of patients living in the NPF area, possibly because they previously had surgeries in Western Hill then Crossgate, but these have now closed and the surgery is in Newton Drive, Newton Hall.
The Dunelm Medical Practice has surgeries at Sunderland Road, Framwellgate Moor and Bearpark.
The Brandon Lane Surgery accepts patients from Merryoaks and Nevilles Cross.
The Belmont Surgery and the Cheveley Park Medical Centre also accept patients from the NPF area.
St Margarets Health Centre in Crossgate is not listed as a GP surgery on the NHS Choices website, however it is understood to provide some specialist services.

Dentists
This information is sourced from the NHS Choices website and, for private-only practices, the Yell website. Not every NHS practice accepts every class of NHS patient.
Castle View Surgery in North Road accepts only private patients.
Claypath Dental Practice is no longer accepting new NHS patients.
Durham Arches Dental Clinic in North Road accepts only private patients.
Durham City Smiles in the Crossgate Centre accepts only private patients.
Elvet Dental Practice in Old Elvet accepts both NHS and private patients.
Kingsgate Dental Surgery in Church Street is “predominantly a private practice but we do have a small NHS contract”.
mydentist in Bridge House, Framwelgate Bridge, accepts both NHS and private patients.
Bupa Dental Care Durham in Gilesgate accepts both NHS and private patients.

Hospitals
The University Hospital of North Durham is within the NPF area. However, residents may be treated at the most appropriate hospital for their condition, which may be the James Cook in Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead and the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
The Lanchester Road Hospital provides a range of mental health and learning disability services. Some services have recently been transferred to Auckland Park Hospital.
Hospice
St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Merryoaks is within the NPF area. It provides specialist palliative and end of life care on both an in-patient and day care basis.
Residential Care Homes
These offer care and support throughout the day and night. Staff help with washing, dressing, at meal times and with using the toilet. Information sourced from the Care Quality Commission website.
There are no residential care homes within the NPF area (though the nursing homes listed below provide this service too). The following homes are in the wider Durham area:
St Aidan Lodge Residential Care Home, Front Street, Framwellgate Moor DH1 5BL – capacity 62 maximum.
Hawthorn House, St Godrics Close, Newton Hall DH1 5PJ – capacity 10 maximum. This home is for adults with learning disabilities.
Nursing homes
These provide all of the services of residential care homes, plus 24-hour medical care from a qualified nurse. Information sourced from the Care Quality Commission website.
Hallgarth Care Home, Hallgarth Street DH1 3AY – capacity 60 maximum.
St Margaret’s Care Home, St Margarets Garth DH1 4DS – capacity 60 maximum.
Melbury Court, Old Dryburn Way DH1 5SE – capacity 87 maximum.
